The industry is becoming more about functionality and giving people the tools to operate well in their daily lives. For instance, the focus on proper posture and core stability is the major contributor as to why Pilates is so popular. The focus on lower impact movement that is easier on the muscles and joints is also popular and is a reason why people are moving to the water classes and to spinning classes. However, some if the biggest trends in the industry are focusing on balance, stability and total body movement. Inventions like BOSU, the Core Board, the TRX Training System as well as classes that focus more on building strength, balance, flexibility and stability such as Kettle Bells, Pilates and YogaFit are all very important trends in the industry right now.
These training systems and workouts focus on functional movement that is meant to build a person's strength from the core out. The workouts mimic everyday movement thus building a person's strength for their everyday activities. The focus is placed on building joint integrity, strengthening the postural muscles and proper bio mechanics which aid in circulation, breathing and proper stability for a life-long approach to fitness instead of exercise that places an emphasis on the pounding of the joints. Over time high impact exercise can weaken the joints if the tendons and ligaments around those joints are not strong. The intention of a these new trends is to make exercise safe, effective and a life long habit by strengthening the core of the body first.
